Dear Kid,

There is one iris blooming in our garden right now. In a sea of beautiful lush iris leaves, only one is flowering. I don’t know if it’s a different variety of iris, if it’s planted in juuuust the right place to get the optimal amount of sun and water for early blooming, or if it’s just plain rebellious.

Its iris friends will be joining it in blooming soon (at least I hope they will) but for now it stands alone, a gorgeous bit of purple among the sea of green.

It’s a trend setter. A herald of summer to come.

It’s also pretty.

Take a minute away from hockey and horses and soccer and whatever other sports are busy being highly competitive at the moment and breathe. Take a minute to smell the flowers and appreciate the day.

The lone iris is a great place to start.
