Yesterday I wrote about excuses. I gave a list of excuses for not bringing food to the office Halloween party. (Go ahead, you can read it. I’ll wait.)
They were pretty sorry sounding excuses.
Hopefully, slightly amusing. Certainly nothing that anyone would take seriously. Including me.
Because that was the point (although some people seemed to have Missed The Point entirely).
The idea was not (emphasis on NOT) that one should use excuses to justify bad behavior or not doing something.
The point was (emphasis on WAS) that excuses are (generally) either ridiculous (aliens took my crudité and erased my memory) or pitiful attempts at justification.
If they are sufficiently funny, they fall into the entertainment category. Which is excellent if you’re looking for entertainment.
It’s important to take responsibility. It’s important to learn to say “I messed up” or “I forgot to do it” or “I didn’t do it right–let me fix it.”
It’s not always easy to take responsibility. But it’s important to keep trying.
