Time is an odd phenomenon. Something that began when I was about your age (and therefore feels relatively modern) has been around for your entire lifetime (and therefore feels a bit old fashioned and outdated). I speak of course of MTV.
Way back at the dawn of the prehistoric year 1981, there was no such thing as MTV. Amazingly, we lived our lives, went to school, and managed to survive. Then on August 1, 1981, the world changed. In the wee hours of the day (by which I mean just after midnight), the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll” and the video of an astronaut planting the MTV flag on the moon announced the introduction of Music Television.
Trivia: Video Killed the Radio Star was the first music video aired on MTV.
Eventually, Mr. Jobs invented the iEverything and music videos became Not the Hottest Thing. These days MTV occasionally plays a music video in between its game shows and reality shows.
August 1st has a couple of other historic-type events associated with it. For example, in 1914, WWI started on August 1st.
And in 1774, Joseph Priestly discovered oxygen and the world stopped holding its breath. This also came in handy for breathing on the moon, whether one was planting an American flag or an MTV flag.
